This eight-week course prepares intermediate Japanese learners for JLPT N2 using the Nihongo So-Matome N2 Vocabulary, Kanji, Grammar, Reading and Listening series. It develops language knowledge and comprehension through the series’ daily units and N2-style practice. Learners progress from foundational review to integrated reading and listening, timed examination work and focused final review. The course builds N2 readiness but does not guarantee a passing result.

Objectives 

  • Recognize N2-level vocabulary and kanji, including contextual meaning, readings and usage distinctions.
  • Understand and apply major N2 grammar patterns and distinguish similar forms.
  • Read N2-level texts for main ideas, details, relationships, author intent and implied meaning.
  • Understand main points and relevant details in N2-level conversations, announcements and explanations.
  • Use appropriate pacing and question-handling strategies for N2-style tasks.
  • Identify recurring errors and strengthen weaker skill areas through focused review.

  • Learners preparing to take the JLPT N2 examination.
  • Learners who have completed JLPT N3 or have equivalent intermediate Japanese ability.

Prerequisites

  • JLPT N3 completion or equivalent intermediate Japanese proficiency.
  • Comfort with hiragana, katakana and common kanji.
  • Functional knowledge of intermediate Japanese grammar and sentence structure.
  • Ability to read short to medium Japanese passages without translating every sentence.
  • Experience following ordinary Japanese conversations at moderate speed.

Course Outline

Week 1: Orientation and N2 Foundations

  • Module 2: So-Matome Study Plan — Introduce the five N2 books and establish a routine for daily study and review.

  • Module 1: Word Meaning in Context — Study common N2 words through example sentences rather than isolated definitions.
  • Module 2: Usage Distinctions — Compare words with similar meanings and select expressions appropriate to the context.

 Day 4: Core Kanji 

  • Module 1: Kanji Recognition and Readings — Review N2 kanji forms and readings within common vocabulary.
  • Module 2: Meaning in Context — Use surrounding words and sentences to interpret unfamiliar or easily confused kanji.

 Day 5: Grammar Foundations 

  • Module 1: Intermediate Grammar Review — Revisit sentence structures needed to understand N2 grammar.
  • Module 2: Meaning and Usage — Examine how grammar forms change a sentence’s meaning, emphasis or level of formality.

 Day 6: Reading and Listening Foundations 

  • Module 1: Short-Text Reading — Identify main points and supporting details in short practical and explanatory passages.
  • Module 2: Spoken-Message Listening — Identify the purpose and key information in short conversations and announcements.

 Day 7: Integrated Foundations 

  • Module 1: Language Knowledge Consolidation — Revisit the week’s vocabulary, kanji and grammar in mixed questions.
  • Module 2: Reading and Listening Application — Apply the same language knowledge to short written and spoken texts.

  

Week 2: Vocabulary, Kanji and Grammar I

Day 8: Vocabulary Usage 

  • Module 1: N2 Vocabulary in Sentences — Study meanings and usage through the So-Matome vocabulary material.
  • Module 2: Collocations — Recognize natural combinations of words and distinguish them from unsuitable combinations.

 Day 9: Kanji in Words and Sentences 

  • Module 1: Kanji-Based Vocabulary — Connect kanji forms and readings with the meanings of complete words.
  • Module 2: Similar-Looking Kanji — Distinguish characters and words that are easily confused.

 Day 10: N2 Grammar Patterns 

  • Module 1: Form and Meaning — Learn the structure and core meaning of selected N2 grammar patterns.
  • Module 2: Sentence Application — Choose appropriate patterns to express intended meanings in context.

 Day 11: Similar Grammar Forms 

  • Module 1: Nuance and Restrictions — Compare related patterns by meaning, context and grammatical restrictions.
  • Module 2: Answer Choice Analysis — Examine why one form fits a sentence and similar alternatives do not.

 Day 12: Short Reading Application 

  • Module 1: Practical Texts — Read notices and other short functional texts for purpose and relevant details.
  • Module 2: Explanatory Texts — Identify the main idea and supporting information in short explanations.

 Day 13: Listening Application 

  • Module 1: Conversations — Identify speakers’ intentions, decisions and relevant details.
  • Module 2: Announcements — Listen for the central message and specific information needed to answer questions.

 Day 14: Cumulative Review 

  • Module 1: Vocabulary, Kanji and Grammar Review — Revisit the week’s language knowledge through mixed N2-style questions.
  • Module 2: Comprehension Practice — Apply reviewed material to short reading and listening tasks.

 

Week 3: Vocabulary, Kanji and Grammar II

Day 15: Abstract Vocabulary 

  • Module 1: Abstract Words and Expressions — Study words used for ideas, states, judgments and relationships.
  • Module 2: Contextual Interpretation — Infer meaning from surrounding sentences and distinguish close alternatives.

Day 16: Formal Expressions 

  • Module 1: Register and Tone — Recognize expressions commonly used in formal or written Japanese.
  • Module 2: Appropriate Usage — Select wording that fits the situation, audience and text type.

Day 17: Cause and Contrast 

  • Module 1: Cause and Result — Study grammar that connects reasons with outcomes.
  • Module 2: Contrast — Compare patterns used to present opposing facts, expectations or viewpoints.

Day 18: Condition and Degree 

  • Module 1: Conditional Meaning — Distinguish patterns expressing conditions and their consequences.
  • Module 2: Extent and Degree — Interpret grammar that describes limits, intensity or degree.

Day 19: Emphasis and Limitation 

  • Module 1: Emphasis — Study forms that highlight a point or strengthen a statement.
  • Module 2: Limitation — Study forms that restrict a claim or narrow its scope.

Day 20: Grammar in Reading 

  • Module 1: Sentence Relationships — Identify how N2 grammar links ideas within and between sentences.

  • Module 2: Common Confusions — Distinguish patterns with similar forms or overlapping meanings.

 Day 23: Paragraph Organization 

  • Module 1: Topic and Support — Identify a paragraph’s main point and the details that develop it.
  • Module 2: Text Flow — Follow transitions, references and changes in direction across sentences.

 Day 24: Main Ideas and Details 

  • Module 1: Central Claims — Identify what a writer primarily wants to explain or argue.
  • Module 2: Supporting Evidence — Locate details that support an answer without relying on word-for-word translation.

 Day 25: Relationships in Text 

  • Module 1: Cause, Effect and Sequence — Trace how events and ideas relate across a passage.
  • Module 2: Contrast and Reference — Identify opposing points and the words or ideas to which expressions refer.

Day 26: Inference and Author Intent 

  • Module 1: Implied Meaning — Draw conclusions supported by the text even when they are not stated directly.
  • Module 2: Writer’s Purpose — Recognize whether a passage explains, recommends, compares or expresses an opinion.

 Day 27: Longer Reading Passages 

  • Module 1: Explanation and Opinion Texts — Follow the structure and argument of longer passages.
  • Module 2: Practical Reading — Extract information from texts written for everyday or functional purposes.

 Day 28: Integrated Midcourse Review 

  • Module 1: Grammar in Context — Revisit grammar through sentences and passages.
  • Module 2: Reading and Listening Connections — Apply vocabulary and kanji knowledge across written and spoken tasks.
